In response to the 2015 terrorist attacks in France, I was creating a set of 6 nail polish soft sculptures and thinking about how to ‘use’ them. On the same day, everyone on Facebook also changed the colors of the French flag into monotone. These six colors of nail polish are the colors used by the national flags of various countries. On certain occasions, such as football matches, women painted their nails with the colors of the national flag. This is where the name “Encouragement” comes from. When making this set of nail polish videos focusing on countries, such as Japan, China, Italy, French, Germany and Finland, I chose places that were popular tourist destinations for Hong Kong people at that time. I am convinced that these sad things will not only happen in one country, but every country has experienced or may have experienced it, so their colors have been lightened.
